All Things Are Kneeling brings together a recent body of paintings, prints, drawings and installation by London based artist, Liorah Tchiprout.
This beautiful and evocative series of work has evolved from Liorah’s 2022 summer residency at Brocket’s North Pennines outpost, where she developed her painting practice and working narrative while spending time in studio and home of Gallery Directors, Jack Bullen and Lizzie Glendinning. This creative journey has resulted in a thoughtful and striking celebration of the artist’s distinct style, a fascinating and multi-layered working methodology to share for her first solo London exhibition.
Unique in painting from reality and imagination at once, Liorah stages mises-en-scènes using her ‘dolls’ or puppets who are based on close friends and characters from books - her ‘safe space’ of women.
The puppets, inspired by the Modicut Yiddish Theatre Company (1926-33), enact scenes taken from recent translations of nineteenth and early twentieth century Yiddish female writers whose works are surprisingly contemporary and relatable in their approach.
The literary references within Liorah’s work are balanced by broader cultural and personal signifiers, from Taylor Swift lyrics to a pair of her trusty cowboy boots she’s never without, situating the pieces very much in the present, and within the living and working environment of the artist.
A full description of this evocative and layered presentation, and the fascinating working methodologies of the artist, can be found in the accompanying catalogue.
